We act “Without words” based on Samuel Beckett – Groteska Theatre 01 June 2009, 19:00

On the occasion of the X Week of the Disabled – “I am mutually in love with Cracow” our theatre is going to perform “Without Words” based on Beckett’s plays. After the performance there will be a discussion panel held: “Theatre – therapy, or art? – about the problems connected with the creativity of the disabled”. Among the invited speakers there will be experts on theatre, therapy, psychology and psychodrama: Professor Wladyslawa Pilecka, Tadeusz Kornaś, Ph.D; Ms Anna Bielańska, and Mr Maciej Książko.

The performance will be a wonderful opportunity for all of these viewers who like to discover the meaning of images and symbols. Beckett’s plays are often compared to a partitura, the group performing to an orchestra, and the director to a conductor. Each theatre which tries to invite a viewer into this world takes up a very difficult and risky challenge. There must be anything accidental on the scene. Every role, and each scene are made of minute links making up for the whole chain. The whole is visible afterwards. The mystery which is in the text. The mystery left for the viewer to discover. If the actors act false notes, they will lose the rhythm and the individual order of the space, while the audience will not get to the heart of the matter, and thus fail to read the message hidden by the author. The austerity of the space and minimalistic scenography make it possible to  emphasize what is most important: acting, actor’s emotions, and mutual relations. The main characters of the performance do not hide behind props, they do not wear fancy costumes. Although they are deprived of almost everything, they retain the deepest human needs and longings.

It looks as if the discussion panel which we want to organise after the performance is going to be equally interesting. We invited several experts:

Professor Władysława Pilecka – psychologist, Member of the Committee for Psychological Sciences (PAN), author of a number of research studies concerning personality development and social competences of the disabled,

Tadeusz Kornaś, Ph.D. – theatre expert, scholar of the Theatre Department of the Jagiellonian University, editor-in-chief of the “Didaskalia” magazine, author of a number of publications and a specialist on alternative theatre,

Ms Anna Bielańska – chairman of Polish Institute of Psychodrama, member of the international board of Psychodrama  Institut   für    Europa, clinical psychologist and psychotherapist, co-founder of the “Psyche” theatre formed by the mentally ill, author of the book “Theatre which cures”.

Mr Maciej Książko – therapist, pedagogue, director of a Community Self-Help Centre Caritas in Kraków, founder and creator of the “Wjazdowa” theatre
